[NEWS] 150926 U-KISS AJ to Continue Studies at Columbia University Until Graduation

U-KISS AJ, who is currently studying at the Ivy League School Columbia University, has made the decision to continue his studies until graduation.
NH Media and AJ has recently come to an agreement for AJ to complete his studies at Columbia University before re-joining U-KISS and their group activities. His contract with NH Media has not been terminated, but AJ will require more time resulting in a longer absence from the music industry.

AJ stated, “It’s very difficult to keep up with activities as well as my studies and I know the company was under a lot of stress and pressure too. Being able to go to a good school, I feel strongly about completing my studies”.

AJ began his career by debuting in 2005 with the group PARAN, he then joined U-KISS, who debuted in 2008. It was revealed in 2012 that he would be attending Columbia University. As he began his studies, he took a short break from his group activities but returned for the group’s 3rd full-length album..

Although AJ showed his enthusiasm with composing songs during his spare time whilst studying, it was difficult to balance his time of studying in the U.S and activities in South Korea.

NH Media responded, “AJ has permission to make his studies a priority. This does not mean he is leaving U-KISS. He still has time remaining on his contract with us”.

U-KISS will be performing at the KyungNam Cultural Arts Centre for the 2015 Korea Drama Awards on October 6th. They recently charted no.2 with their 11th Japanese single “Stay Gold”.

[ARTICLE] 140109 Columbia student by day, Korean pop star by night

AJ tosses the messenger bag over his shoulder, shoving his hands in his pockets, as a smirk forms from the corner of his mouth. The photographer’s camera clicks.
“Try to find the owl!” AJ says, nodding at Columbia University’s statue of the goddess Athena sitting behind him. “Finding it means you’ll do well in school.”
Two prospective students checking out the campus stop at the sight of the young man modeling for a photographer, his entourage waiting below. What is going on here?their faces say. Should we know who this is?
AJ pays them no mind, instead tilting his head to the side to give another angle. He’s used to this, after all. No one in New York may recognize him, but back home in South Korea, he’s a star.
Meet AJ — born Kim Jaeseop — the 22-year-old member of Korean pop band U-KISS, who also happens to be a freshman at Columbia. Like Miley Cyrus’ Disney Channel character, Hannah Montana, AJ leads a double life — international heartthrob on one half of the Earth, psych major living in a dorm room on the other.
To date, his boy band has released five studio albums and 12 EPs that have produced 24 singles, totaling well over a quarter of a million records sold worldwide. U-KISS kicks off its first US mini-tour at the Best Buy Theater Thursday night.
Like virtually every boy band, each guy has a persona. AJ is the serious one, rapping about girls, girls and more girls. Fans even have a nickname for themselves — KissMes.
“In Korea and Japan, when the members of U-KISS go outside, they’re pretty much recognized. U-KISS is pretty famous,” he says. “[But] when I [came here for school], no one recognized me.”
Born and raised in Seoul, AJ got his start in the music industry at age 14. That’s when his older sister suggested to her friend, who was working for a company putting together a boy band, Paran, that AJ should audition — despite the fact that he couldn’t sing or dance.
“But my sister thought I looked like I should be in a band,” he says.
So did the company. AJ got the spot and left school in seventh grade to pursue an unlikely music career.
Upset that management didn’t want him to sing live because of his vocal cracks from puberty, AJ decided to sing into his mike during a dress rehearsal.
“My manager heard that and, in front of all of the producers, he said with this loud voice, ‘CAN YOU TURN OFF MIKE No. 5?’ ” recalls AJ. “I was really embarrassed, and I cried backstage.” That motivated him to take voice lessons.
After a few years with Paran, the group disbanded, and in 2011 AJ landed a spot with the higher profile boy band, U-KISS, an acronym for Ubiquitous Korean International Idol Super Star.
AJ’s current tour is produced by Mnet America, an English-language cable channel “for all things Asian cool,” which will feature them on the show “Headliners.” It finishes in time for him to start the semester at Columbia on Jan. 21.
Even at the height of his success, AJ was unhappy about having given up his schooling for his career. So he hired a tutor, studied relentlessly and earned his GED — and eventually got into one of the top colleges in the world.
“Although I did not receive a normal education like other students, I have been able to prove that I can compete with the best of them, taking control of my future,” he says.
His bandmates are supportive of the decision. One, Kevin Woo, even says he’d hire him as his therapist, should the whole psychology thing turn into a new career for him.
“There’s no reason for him not to be,” Woo says with a laugh. “He can really tell what someone is thinking. Roughly.”
But living AJ’s double life doesn’t come without its struggles.
“The pro is that I can experience the best of both worlds, but the con would be the confusion,” says AJ. “I am kind of confused on my identity. But since I chose this life, though it is difficult, I have to deal with it.”
When AJ announced he was going to take time off to attend Columbia, the news spread across the K-pop blogs all the way over to America. Maybe life wouldn’t be so different over here.
“I knew that U-KISS wasn’t really a worldwide [phenomenon]. But on the other hand, I expected some students would notice me because there is a Columbia students’ blog, and they actually posted me on the page,” he says. “But since no one did notice me [once I got here], I was kind of disappointed.”
Eventually that first semester, AJ got a dose of his other life. “Since I missed Korean food desperately, I went down to Koreatown by myself, and one night after I had a dinner, there was one person declaring [to me] ‘I’m a KissMe!’” he says. “That was the first time someone in NY recognized me as a singer. I took a picture with her.”
Now AJ has found that keeping the worlds separate can be beneficial. Only a few of his friends in NY know about his secret. “I want them to know me [just] as a person,” he says.
In his first semester, AJ studied obsessively, sleeping only three to four hours a night, leaving virtually no time for play. This semester, now that he’s proven to himself that he won’t fail, he’s going to take it easier. He wants to join a fraternity, go see Broadway shows and experience NY’s great restaurants — with tequila, his favorite. Maybe he’ll even find a girlfriend.
“There is one dream that I want to do,” he says, searching for his words. “I want to have a campus couple.”

[NEWS] 131029 U-KISS' AJ to temporarily return to his studies at Columbia University this January

It has been revealed that U-KISSAJ will return to Columbia University to complete his studies this January.

But no worries as this doesn't mean he's leaving the group, he'll just be taking a temporary leave of absence as he resumes his studies to maintain his enrollment at the school like he has done previously.

NH Media wrote on U-KISS' official website:

Hello. It's NH Media.
We thank the fans who are always supporting U-KISS.
We are making an announcement about the important matter of AJ's study overseas in the States.
AJ, who is currently enrolled in Columbia University, will be returning to the States starting January 2014 to continue his studies.
We know that many of you will be surprised by the sudden announcement ahead of their comeback.
It does not mean that he will leave U-KISS, and just like how he had a short hiatus for his studies last year, [AJ] plans to return to promote with U-KISS after completing his studies.
Their scheduled activities within this year for their 8th mini album, which will begin soon, will go on as planned with no changes.
We apologize for sharing this news ahead of the promotions for their 8th mini album. There will be no changes to the activities for their mini 8th album that starts this week, so please give them your interest and support.
Thank you.
So it seems KissMe's will have to treasure the next few months until 2014 as AJ will be absent from activities for at least a portion of next year.

The boys will be releasing 'Moments' on the 31st, so give them your support!

[NEWS] 130602 AJ to Return to Columbia University for Spring Semester 2014

“Catching two rabbits”, the ones who want to do it all.
Some people choose the path of an idol career while others choose the life of student, however there are the few who chooses instead to say a “temporary goodbye” to be able to pursue both. Even after attending school, they have the possibility of returning to their team. Instead of being omitted from their team, they are do both their entertainment activities and studies.

Last time we announced that U-KISS’s AJ will be continue with his idol activities even as he attends the Ivy League school, Columbia University. Since then he has attended one semester and from February he also participated in U-KISS’s album release and sub-unit (uBEAT) activities. However next Spring semester, he will be back as a psychology student. AJ stated, “I don’t want to give up my studies because of U-KISS activities. I’m getting ready to achieve an A next semester, so I’m using all my free time to read”.
AJ’s year has been busy.
For half of a year he would stand on stage as a performer, and the other half he would return to be a regular student. Even while performing his idol group activities, AJ was able to be accepted by the Ivy League Columbia University. AJ’s determination to study all night despite his other commitments has been truly admirable to fans.
Many idols have been forced to “choose and focus” when it comes to their studies. Many have departed from their group for this very reason. Usually idols who pursue studying focus on majors that would help with their current career as an entertainer, however AJ has taken a completely different path and is majoring in Psychology.
<Sports Chosun> met with AJ and his heavy backpack. We asked him about his life during his semester at Columbia University and how this affected his activities. We will also reveal, in our interview with AJ, how he feels about returning to his campus life while continuing with group activities.
When I went to school, I only studied. When I debuted with PARAN, I was 15 years-old and I had to drop out of school. I had no chance to be a student and I always thought it was such a pity. I know that in life people are always learning and being an entertainer has a lot to give that others who study don’t experience. My ambition to study came when I heard someone say, “If you go to school you will know of everything, but if you don’t you would have missed out”.”
It isn’t easy to transition from the stage to school. Even more burden is placed upon his shoulders as he is attending the highly prestigious Columbia University. But even so, when AJ speaks about his school life his eyes light up. Last semester, he made the bold move to shave his head and had a fulfilling and fun campus life.
“I really wanted to focus on my studies only, so I shaved my head and went off to do that. While I was there, no one recognised me as a Korean idol. No one was able to recognise me. But it was a relief. In my life I was able to truly experience the life of a student. I was able to study with my friends in the library with the right mindset and eat late-night snacks together.”
Last semester, his goal was a score of 4.3 but he had achieved 3.7. He also began his U-KISS activities immediately after his semester ended. We pondered as to why AJ decided to push himself so far, mentally and physically, to do both his idol activities and studies at the time. His answer was not meant for today, but tomorrow (the future).

“No one can be an idol forever. Being idol isn’t a life job. When I am 30 years-old I would like to work at an office. I don’t want to settle in one place. Being a singer is great, but I want to produce albums, distribute music, work with marketing…there’s a lot I want to do.”

AJ was only able to be given this opportunity to study and work at the same time because of his company. So he wasn’t forced to choose between departing the group and his studies but was given a ‘win-win’ situation.

“I made sure to tell my company that the possibility of studying was absolutely not to be omitted from my contract. (smile) My company has provided a lot of support with my condition to attend school no matter what. My fellow members also have given positive support to me. We all have the desire to study, Kevin would like to study as well”.
AJ will be returning to school next Spring semester. He has already determined his goals for the next semester too.

“I don’t know if it’s just America, but everyone is very big and muscular and everyone is able to stay up two nights continuously without any trouble. I don’t want to fall behind on strength, so during my activities I am exercising to build up my strength. I want to read novels and study with friends, get in touch with my seniors and study with them. Next semester, I also want to try being a campus couple. Of course, it has to be a friend with a good heart. (smile) Ah, also I want to receive an A next semester.”

Hearing that AJ, from his studies to his idol activities, hasn’t wasted any effort, his mother is extremely proud of his son.
“I can never forever the burst of happiness I felt when I first received my acceptance letter from Columbia University. I was very worried as English is not my first language but Lena Park sunbaenim, who also attended Columbia University, gave me a lot of strength with her words, “First go and experience”. I was scared at first, but I had go regrets after doing my best. I want to be able to reach all my goals.”
