Idol group U-KISS’s member Hoon has recently joined the musical “When A Man Loves”, it will be his musical debut. We caught up with him to understand how he is transforming into a good and hard-working actor on stage.
We met Hoon on April 19 at the Universal Art Centre who stated with a bright smile, “It hasn’t been that long since I’ve joined the practicing sessions, so I have to work really hard” and “Hong KyungMin sunbae is giving me a lot of advice, so I can work hard to learn”.
As this musical will be Hoon’s first, even though he is unfamiliar with the workings, by practising he has solved his issues little by little. Although he still lacks experience and skill at this point in time, with a little more hard work he wishes to become a great musical actor.
- This is your first musical challenge, what is it like?
When I am doing activities with U-KISS, I do not have much time to do anything else. But this time U-KISS will be debuting its first sub-unit group ‘uBEAT’ with three members only, so it gives me some time to focus on other activities. Previously I had ambitions to do musicals. Within the group, vocalist members SooHyun and Kevin were both cast in the musical ‘Summer Snow’. I’m also a vocalist member and, when they were cast, I started to think about how I would like to work hard and be given a chance like that. Luckily, the opportunity came through the company and I took it.
- This opportunity came really suddenly. How much time have you had to practice before your first performance?
I have only begun practicing three weeks ago. And the first performance is scheduled on April 26. Because I joined at a very late, I have to make up for it with hard work. I practice all day long. I receive a lot of help from Hong KyungMin sunbae. I spent my time listening to KyungMin sunbae’s recorded audio, practice singing and even the score on the keyboard. It’s very difficult to be used to a script, but I am memorising it little by little.
- How do the other actors control their breathing techniques?
Because the practice period is so short and as I am practicing for the second musical casting roster, many actors will be depart. I need to adjust to the breathing techniques. Everyone is very caring, especially since I joined belatedly, and provide a lot of support for happy practice sessions.
- What made you want to join the musical “When A Man Loves”?
Firstly it is a very creative musical. Secondly there are so many great actors who are attached to the musical, I thought it would be fantastic if I was able to be a part of it as well.
- What are the differences and commonalities between the confidence of the main protagonist, EunSoo, and yourself?
Firstly EunSoo is a very pure hero-like character. That type of purity is very similar to my own appearance. I am not very experienced with women at all, that type of purity. I don’t think there are any differences.
- Because the character is so innocent, what is the “first kiss scene” with Narsha like?
All the female actors who have been cast as the character ‘HaYoon’ are all seniors to me. Firstly because I am so inexperienced and pure in that aspect, the kissing scene makes me nervous. I think it would have been less nerve-wracking to do the scene with younger actors, but I am very happy to act it out with the nuna (older women) actors. My lips are nice and full so I think it’s good for kissing scenes.
- Your fans must be very surprised with the kiss scene.
That’s right. On social networking sites, they tell me “why are you cheating on us?” and “don’t do the musical!”. Reports have been released about having a kiss scene with Narsha sunbae, so fans have been comment on it. Although I am an innocent person, I am a bad man.So I tell them, jokingly, “Come and watch the performance and I will try to do it confidently”.
- If you get the chance to do another musical, what would you like to do?
I recently saw Eom KiJoon sunbae’s performance in ‘The Sorrows of Young Werther’. So I would love to have the chance to be able to stand and act on the same stage as EomKiJoon sunbae. Amongst idols, I would like to work with Girls’ Generation’s SeoHyun.
- Do you think you have any advantages as a musical actor?
As I am a vocalist member of U-KISS, I have confidence in singing the songs. I think I can convey the message of the songs well. I think because it is my first musical, I have a sort-of energy to work hard. I also think that is an advantage.
- What are your plans for the future?
Firstly I just want to focus on the current musical. If I can do well, I think I will be able to help out my other members. U-KISS will also be debuting its first sub-unit group, uBEAT. It would be great if we could form a ballad unit group with Kevin, SooHyun and KiSeop in the future. We have a Japanese ZEPP tour to be held in five different areas, scheduled in July.
